Acquisition and Modelling of Indoor and Enclosed Environments

Indoor modelling gains increased attention in the last decade. Several factors contribute to this interest. First of all, the cities are getting larger as a concurrence  much more people spend their time indoor. According to last investigations 75 % of the population lives in cities and about 87% of the time is indoors. The building environments are getting more complex. The progress of architecture and construction research and developments has made possible a huge non-regular building complexes to be built, such as museums, airports, stadiums and shopping malls. Management, security and guidance in such environments cannot be completed with traditional 2d methods. Therefore a lot of research has been dedicated to indoor modelling but in isolation and dedicated to specific applications.

Indoor space differs from outdoor space in many aspects: spaces are smaller; there are many constraints as walls, doors, stairs, furniture. To be able to represent indoor spaces in a proper way many data acquisition concepts, data models, and standards should be redefined to meet the requirements of indoor spatial applications. The acquisition, modelling of and navigation in indoor and enclosed environments are research activities that have received great interest in recent years. These activities are by both  1) advancements of acquisition systems, photogrammetry and computer vision, modelling, mobile computing and augmented systems, an 2) demand by indoor application systems such as positioning and navigation or facility management to name a few.

This increased research activity has been matched by industry that has invested in commercial and open source applications. However the research is still very fragmented and application-specific.


  • To promote and advance indoor modelling and navigation research within the ISPRS community.
  • To examine and evaluate the state of the art in all aspects of indoor modelling and navigation.
  • To examine and evaluate the application of indoor models for navigation, crisis decision support systems, simulations, information systems, and augmented systems.
  • To share best practices, discuss user requirements and explore opportunities for future research directions.

Paper Submission and Publication

All papers will be subject as review by a scientific committee. Accepted papers will be published in a ISPRS Annals or ISPRS Archives. Authors of selected papers might be invited to extend the paper for possible publication in special issues of International Journals. Prospective authors are encouraged to consider the following possibilities for submission:


Full papers will be double-blind reviewed by at least two member of the Scientific Committee. Upon acceptance they will be publish within the ISPRS annals. Such papers should report new techniques, algorithms, bench marks, technology developments, frameworks, and best practices, which are not published elsewhere. Authors are encouraged to submit full papers (max 6 pages) or short papers (max 6 pages) in ISPRS format. These papers will be evaluated on their originality, novelty, and impact.


Papers accepted on the basis of extended abstract will be published in the ISPRS Archives. Such papers could be professional/demo papers demonstrating innovative systems and practical approaches, or research in progress.
